Look at it this way

Thomas Telford was a star of the industrial revolution. He built bridges, aqueducts, roads and harbours, and he was the founder of the Institution of Civil Engineers. The company that takes his name is the Institution's 'knowledge business'. Thomas Telford commercializes the intellectual prowess of the Institution for the benefit of the civil engineering and construction industries. It's very successful, but its graphic identity had been diluted by those of its business divisions.

Thomas Telford’s revolutionised bridge-like logo and graphic identity lets its divisions harness the company’s reputation and strength, and build on its ethical heritage.
